Pitt Town's Josh Hunter wins Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Car title

OUR Junior Sports Star nominee Josh Hunter is the new proud Australian title holder in the 2012 Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Car Championship, having a clean sweep of the last round in Victoria at the weekend.

The Pitt Town rookie surpassed all expectations to take the lead mid-way in the series and then hold off all comers to capture the title in record-breaking style at Sandown Park.

Driving his Falcon BA, Josh finished on 648 points, 90 ahead of runner-up Jim Pollicina, and is the first rookie to win the series since it began in 2008.

He also broke Chris Smerdon's record for most round wins in a season (four), Terry Wyhoon's record for most consecutive race wins (six) while equalling Wyhoon's record for the most race wins in a season (10).

"It was an awesome finish to the 2012 racing season," Josh, 17, told the Rouse Hill Times from the Gold Coast where he is enjoying a much-needed break.

"I am so happy to take home the title and it was a perfect weekend at Sandown Park with our car doing very well.

"But I couldn't have done without the support from Fernandez Motorsport, Finance Ezi, Mydrade and Castrol Edge and all my family and friends."

Remarkably Josh is still on his learner license and also completed his HSC exams a few weeks ago. Hence his schoolie week at the Gold Coast.

"It's been an amazing year and now I am enjoying myself without anymore pressure for the rest of the year," Josh said.

"Next year if I get the needed sponsorship and financial backing I will compete in the Dunlop development series (formerly known as Fujitsu series)."
